Most people have had the experience of massage, and even during the long holidays of the Spring Festival, they will choose massage to relax. But if you ask consumers whether they have ever received an invoice, they may think for a while before realizing, "I don't think I have!" However, Six Star Massage Club has proactively given receipts to customers and declared the massage therapists' 10% business fee since the first day of its business 20 years ago. The modern management it has introduced is not only a learning object for the industry, but also a training cradle for massage talents. How did General Manager Jiang Qingzhong do it? On the eve of the Spring Festival, step into the basement floor of the "Six Star City Hall" near the Taipei Arena. The view is wide and the space is transparent and bright. Under the guidance of the chef, guests embark on a journey of "relaxation of body and mind". From the time the customer is served tea to the time they leave after the massage, every process has been designed. Six Star General Manager Jiang Qingzhong can be described as a "detail control". He knows very well that quality is hidden in various details. When the Far View Magazine team came to discuss various filming issues with him in the reception area, "I'm sorry, please keep your voice down as much as possible. I'm worried that it might disturb the guests..." Jiang Qingzhong said tactfully.
After everyone deliberately lowered their voices, the surroundings fell into silence, leaving only soft music, and their eyes fell on the tables and chairs. Don't underestimate "them", these are four containers of teak furniture and furnishings that Jiang Qingzhong specially imported from Bali, including tables, chairs, paintings and lighting. They have been used for 20 years since he started his business and are almost flawless. "Mr. Jiang can't stand any traces. His colleagues use sandpaper to polish the shop once a month to remove cup marks or stains left by customers, and then apply a layer of olive oil. Even the leaves that are so green and reflective that they look like plastic are wiped out. He will touch them with his hands to see if there is any dust, and he can't tolerate any dead leaves..." A female chef said without hesitation, "Everything in the shop is real." Not only are the shoe cabinets and keys made of wood, but even the massage bed is customized. Jiang Qingzhong often uses his brain to constantly adjust details in order to make customers feel comfortable and satisfied when lying on the bed. "Many manufacturers will say that this bed is used by Six Star when they sell it," he said proudly.
When customers experience it themselves, they will understand why Jiang Qingzhong is a "detail-obsessed" person. The massage master will first serve tea, then lead the guests to sit down and change into slippers, put the bags and shoes into the locker, and finally hand the guests a wooden key. Then go to the open space, sit on the swivel sofa chair, put your feet into the marble foot bath, and the chef will first ask the guest if the water temperature is just right? Then tell me the time for the neck and shoulder massage and press the alarm to start the massage... "The reason why we have a meter is to let everyone know that Six Star is honest and will never steal customers' time," said Jiang Qingzhong. When Six Star started its business, it hoped to change the public's stereotype of the massage industry and took the lead in introducing modern management and formulating a set of processes.
Over the past 20 years, Six Star has set many precedents and was the first massage provider in Taiwan to issue invoices. In the early days, when customers received the invoices, their eyes lit up, because massages also had receipts. A colleague privately admitted that very few massage businesses would issue invoices, and as they grow bigger, they will have to follow Six Star and issue receipts. When "Foresight" asked 32-year-old Wang Xiaolan (pseudonym), who often experiences various massages, whether she had ever received an invoice? She thought for a long time before she said, "You didn't ask, and I didn't notice it. I really haven't received it, but I did get it once when I went to Six Star for a trial." Moreover, Six Star’s financial statements are all certified by accountants, and they will proactively declare the master’s 10% business fee. In fact, the unwritten rule in the industry is that most massage therapists are contracted and paid by the piece, and it is unlikely that the industry will file taxes for the therapists. However, Six Star insists on reporting business expenses. Isn’t it worried that the therapists will backlash? Jiang Qingzhong shared that the massage industry can only develop sustainably if it is legal and compliant. The old master even came to express his gratitude because when they bought a house, the bank only agreed to process the mortgage loan after seeing proof of tax payment indicating income.
A massage therapist who has been in the industry for more than a decade said that he felt he had lost 10% of his income because he reported his business fees truthfully. However, because Six Star has a relatively stable customer base, his actual income is no less than that of other massage parlors.
Focusing on professional services at mid- to high-end prices, Six Star has a customer return rate of 75% and is even the first to charge a 10% service fee. Jiang Qingzhong emphasized that the purpose is to cultivate the concept of "you get what you pay for" among consumers. Six Star has no gimmicks or tricks, no series, and no detailed services with additional payments. The massage items and fees are very simple, 1,200 yuan for one hour, 1,800 yuan for 1.5 hours, and 2,400 yuan for two hours, plus a 10% service charge. They encourage customers to buy gift certificates to save 10% of the cost.
Therefore, technical expertise becomes the key to success. "Customers who come here to relax are very demanding, so we have to constantly improve our chefs' skills. Six Star's customers have a high degree of stickiness," said Jiang Qingzhong. Even though customer loyalty is high, after three years of the pandemic, Six Star has also begun to adjust its stores. Currently, there are three stores in Tianmu, Dazhi, and the City Hall, which will open at the end of 2024. "I don't want to win by quantity, but to focus on exquisite services at mid-to-high-end prices. The customer return rate in Tianmu and Dazhi is 75%, and many of them are regular customers who specify the chef and consume twice a week on average."Jiang Qingzhong said that in addition to local people, the City Hall hotel also attracts many tourists and foreign guests from five-star hotels. There is even a female customer of Six Star who never misses her massage 365 days a year. Even when the epidemic is severe, she still insists on going once a week. After the epidemic, Six Star adjusted its location and happened to move the store to the vicinity of the Taipei Dome. She then takes a taxi to get a massage every day. "This customer said he felt very relaxed after the massage and fell asleep easily when he got home," Master Yang recounted. There are also customers who drive here from Sanxia and Linkou, as well as many tech elites, gym coaches, and business travelers.
Six Star is recognized as a big player in the massage industry. Many massage therapists in newly opened massage parlors come from Six Star, which can be called the training cradle of the industry. One boss privately admitted that we did poach talent from Six Star and also learned a lot of their systems. Isn’t Six Star worried about being overtaken by up-and-coming stars?Jiang Qingzhong said calmly that everyone has his or her own customers. Six Star focuses on professionalism and refinement, not quantity. Those who like us will naturally stay. It's like shopping in a department store. Each type of department store will serve different customer groups. "It's a good thing that Taiwan's massage industry is flourishing. Everyone can serve their own customers, and the industry can continue to grow." He further pointed out.
Six Star, which used to be open all year round, only closed for one day on New Year's Eve last year. Since the second day of the New Year, customers have flocked in again. With 21 years in the industry, he has high expectations for the massage industry. He calls on the industry to operate legally and in compliance with regulations, pay taxes truthfully, and for consumers to proactively request invoices. Only in this way can Taiwan's massage industry develop healthily and even become a new soft power.
